Bioglitter + Cicada Wings
A Unique Glitter Makeup Look Inspired by Nature
Sometimes at Glitterazzi Glitter the best makeup inspiration doesn’t come from a palette of incredible bioglitter mixes. It comes from the earth and the sky. One summer afternoon in Jervis Bay, a pair of cicada wings floated into the Glitterazzi studio like a sign. Iridescent, fragile, and unexpectedly powerful, they sparked an idea. What if we could turn this tiny natural marvel into a unique glitter look using only ethical, biodegradable sparkle?

This blog is an ode to that moment, to the magic of Australian summers, and to the beauty of bioglitter done differently.
Cicadas: The Glittering Icons of Aussie Summer
In Jervis Bay and across the country, cicadas are more than background noise. They are the sound of summer. Male cicadas can sing at over 100 decibels, louder than a festival speaker and in a symphony that fills the trees and buzzes through the heat. But their story is even more fascinating than their volume.
Cicadas live underground for most of their lives, some for as long as seven years. They emerge in their final season, shed their skins, and take flight in a dazzling display of sound, colour, and transformation. Their time above ground is short, but spectacular. Wings are often shed naturally as part of this cycle, leaving behind tiny transparent-glass like remnants of their final act.

First Nations Wisdom
For First Nations people, cicadas hold seasonal and cultural significance. On Dharawal Country, which includes Jervis Bay, cicadas signal the start of Ngoonungi, a season of storms, gathering, and abundance. They are seen as timekeepers, reminding us of nature’s rhythms and the interconnectedness of all life. Some communities even refer to them as “rain bringers,” acknowledging their deep relationship with country.
We honour these traditions by treading lightly and creating beauty that doesn't exploit.
The Look: From Nature to Glitter Glam
This unique glitter makeup look began with a pair of wings and ended with a full celebration of shimmer.
To capture the iridescence of the cicada’s wings, we used our Viridescent Hippocampus from the Opal range. A transparent, opal green plant-based bioglitter that shifts and shines just like the wings that inspired it. This plastic-free glitter is certified to break down in nature, not cling to it.
For the eyes, we used Bronze Sabbath, one of our warmest core fine glitter mixes, to bring contrast and depth. The eye look was styled with this bronze shimmer as a liner effect across the lid and a dramatic four-point winged black liner underneath echoing the natural geometry of cicada wings.
The green glitter was extended above the brow and below the eye in a shape that mirrored the wings’ arc, creating a wearable tribute to the insect’s delicate structure.
Why use Bioglitter for a glitter makeup look?
